While restoring an old chateau in France, art historian and antique dealer Tom van der Bruggen was inspired by the original wooden beam design of the area, and used small planks to fashion the model castle of his dreams. Van der Bruggen’s creation, KAPLA, from the Dutch “kabouter plankjes,” meaning "small planks, ” remains wildly popular in Europe and in the design world. A huge Eiffel Tower made of thousands of Kapla planks is exhibited in the new Cité de l'Architecture in Paris. Kapla has also shown at the Louvre and at the Children's Museum of Manhattan.
